Who's Hurt—and Who's Not—by $3 Gas

CNBC -- Even though the peak driving season is still months away, gasoline prices have been creeping to their highest level since October 2008, and it looks like consumers should brace themselves for higher prices at the gas pump this summer.

$3/gal gas hurts everyone, however those that have planned and purchased knowing it was an eventuality will fare better. Those that can modify habits to accommodate less driving will fare better (although prices of all products still rise).

I know that when $3/gal gas hit in 2006 that my family chose the newly redesigned Honda Civic in part over the Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla because of it having the best promise for fuel mileage. In the high price summers, it's paid off, and in winter it simply has paid off in lesser leaps.

On the other hand, I switch to a smaller, sportier car at this time of year opposed to my small pickup that does winter duty. not only is it more fun and suitable to the clearing weather, it nearly doubles my fuel economy.

Capitalism at it's best. Make less to keep the price high. After all, there is no real competition so what is to stop them.

Retirees on a fixed income need to rethink the allocation of their assets.

You can make considerably more than you can get from a certificate of deposit in an intermediate-term corporate bond fund.

Even though I do not drive very much each month, I am not happy with the higher prices. It will drive costs up for everyone as business must recoup the rise in there costs or go out of business. Either way the consumer loses.

Oil royalty holders (not synonymous with "wealthy," you can get part interest for very little money) benefit on high crude prices.

The royalties go up much faster than the expenses in a high priced crude market.

"According to Hastings, the situation now is much different than in past oil price spikes. For one thing, technology has created more home-based businesses and jobs that allow for telecommuting. This reduces the dependancy of consumers on driving to get to their jobs. "

In just 2 years, the situation is THAT much different? I find it hard to believe.

Those without jobs and hunting will be hurt because they will not be able to hunt for a job with the same intensity and drive. That will hurt them and us, too.

I don't buy enough gas for it to make much difference. I only drove 37.9 miles last week.

I'm needing to go buy gas tomorrow. I need to go to the bank as there's a check sitting around and banks haven't extended Remote Deposit Capture (RDC) privileges to individual customers. I suspect we'll never get RDC, where business customers submit scanned check images, for individual customers. And I suspect only the best business customers get RDC in the first place.

On the other hand, I'm wondering how long they're going to have paper checks in the first place. One box lasts me years as I write only a couple of checks a month.

High gas prices will slow the recovery of the economy. It stymies the employment of many in areas where jobs are long distance from homes. This hurts tourism in many areas. With the Fed suggesting an interest rate increase is not out of the question, we may see the no job recovery continue much longer than anyone wants.

Creeping is not the right word for 15 cent a gallon jumps. Obama won't do anything about it until closer to election time because he will need everything he can to help his Democrat friends in congress get reelected, especially after the pass health care reform against the will of the people.

$3.00 a gallon gas sounds pretty good to me. Best price I've seen in these parts is 89.4 per litre - about $3.40 a gallon.

Our only hope to mess up their plans to sell is gas at $3+ per gallon is to continue to use less, as if we're still in recession.

It will hurt the entire economy. Even though supply and demand are apparently no longer factors in fuel prices, disposable income will determine sales. If you only have X dollars left after bills, it will buy less $3.00 gas than it did $2.00 gas.

Everyone is hurt by higher gas prices. The price of fuel affects the prices of many good and services which also rise because of the higher costs for fuel.

If you are putting more of your money into gas, it takes away from other things...food, rent/mortgage, lights, recreation. Who wants to only drive around, if you cannot have a cup of coffee when you get there?
